ABOUT THE GARAGISTI EUROPEAN MOTORCAR REPAIR
WHY THE NAME “THE GARAGISTI?”
The Formula 1 championship as we know it began in 1950, and the early seasons were dominated by big names from Italy: Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Ferrari. Within a few years, small British teams had entered the championship. These race teams and constructors were smaller operations, with lower budgets. To make up for their lack of funding, they found creative innovations to go fast. Soon, they started winning races.
Enzo Ferrari did not appreciate his once-dominant team being defeated by upstarts, and dismissed these teams as “garagisti.” In Italian, a garagista (pl., garagisti) is somebody who works in a garage, a simple mechanic. The name, lobbed as an insult, became a badge of pride. The garagisti were responsible for most of the technical innovations of the era. Today, a garagista refers to a small manufacturer that brings something new to the table.
